Dragons are massive flying and fire breathing reptiles from the renowned television series the Game Of Thrones. It is rumoured that they have had a deep connection with magic which seems to be accurate as magic returned to the world of Game Of Thrones after the birth of three baby dragons, the first time in three hundred years. The most potent and devastating creatures of the world of Game Of Thrones are said to be the dragons which are because of their massive size, the capabilities they possess and the power to lay waste the mortal armies. The men and women who were strong enough to tame these beasts used them to forge vast empires in the continents of Essos and Westeros.
House of Targaryen
The House of Targaryen is said to be the rightful commander of the dragons, and they used them to conquer and unite the seven kingdoms of Westeros three hundred years before the War Of The Five Kings. However, most of the beasts owned by the Targaryen House died in Dance Of The Dragons after which those born to the Targaryen House were the size of cats and soon all of them died which led the world to believe that they are an extinct species.
Dragons have a long winding structure with scales running from top to bottom. They have four limbs the two short back legs and two large wings as forelimbs. Dragons have teeth and claws as sharp as a sword.
According to Tyrion Lannister- “Dragons are intelligent, more intelligent than men according to some maesters. They have affection for their friends and fury for their enemies.”
One of the most astounding features is the fire breath; there are two tubes on either side of their mouth from which they release chemicals which react vigorously creating fire. Dragons are very resistant to fire especially their flame which will not damage their mouth while they expel it and it is believed that in many ways they are the flesh form of fire. Hence it is said-“fire cannot kill a dragon.”
Dragons are the only carnivores other than men that tend to eat cooked meat rather than raw meat. We the audience were introduced to the eating habit in season 2 when Daenerys Targaryen tried to feed her dragons raw meat, but later on, in Qarth she found out that dragons need to cook their food in the fire before eating it. Hence Daenerys taught them to respond to the vocal command “Dracarys”. This was like a signal for the dragons to start releasing the flames of furry which also helped them cook their food.
Daenerys named her three dragons- Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.
The beasts of the fire can never indeed be “tamed” however, they can be bonded with and trained. They are intelligent creatures, and just like a horse they can be trained by their rider to respond to specific voice commands, the key to training them is to make sure that they are well fed. One with a full stomach is more obedient. Once a strong and affectionate bond is formed the dragons may even nuzzle their riders hoping to be petted.
