The Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College (BRSNC) was established in 1953. It is a general degree college situated in Barrackpore, Kolkata, West Bengal. Located in the heart of the city of Barrackpore, this college has two campuses, one for the Science departments and the other for the Arts and Commerce departments. The Science department is situated at 85 Middle Road, Kolkata 120 and the Arts and Commerce departments are situated at 6, Riverside Road, Kolkata120. The BRSNC is one of the most-prestigious institutions in the whole of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
College at a Glance: Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College (BRSNC) is affiliated to the West Bengal State University (WBSU) & formerly under University of Calcutta (CU). It is registered under 2f & 12B of UGC Act with Autonomous Post Graduate Courses. The college has been re-accredited by NAAC (Third Cycle) (Grade – A; 3.08; Period May 2014 – April 2019), Colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPE) Status. BRSNC is funded by RUSA, DBT-BOOST, GOWB.

Courses Offered: BRSNC offers a wide-range of courses and subject combinations for the students who are willing to get admitted to the college. The college offers both Under-Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate (PG) courses. UG courses include B.Sc., B.Com and B.A. and PG courses include M.Com and M.Sc.
Faculty: The Principal of this college is Dr. Monojit Ray. BRSNC has a renowned faculty in the entire state. The professors take excellent care in maintaining high standards of teaching in the classes and put much effort in establishing a strong student-teacher bond. The HODs conduct weekly assessments of their respective departments and keep record of the topic progressions and classes. Attendance is given much importance. At least 75% attendance is mandatory failing which the students are barred from appearing in their exams. Parent-Teacher meetings of all departments are conducted yearly. Class-tests, internals, mock tests have a regularized system in this college.

Library: BRSNC has an award-winning library in the entire district. It has two fully-functional, well-furnished, AC libraries in the two campuses which have a vast collection of books, magazines, journals and e-books. The central library is computerized with around 55,000 printed documents and 51 regular journals. The library is automated with open source software Koha. The catalogue of the entire collection of the library is available 24X7 remotely through the WebOPAC powered by Koha.
The Library is a member of N – LIST (National Library and Information Services infrastructure for Scholarly Content) consortium of INFLIBNET through which the members of the library can access 6300+ e-journals and 1,00,000 e-books. Moreover the Library is subscribing IEEE Journals in electronic forms. The Library is a part of NPTel (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), an initiative of IITs & IISs to enhance the quality of education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses. The Library is Institutional Member of BCL, Kolkata.
There are Departmental Libraries in each department for the students of concerned departments. The libraries also have facility of network connected PCs which the students can use any time. Apart from that, the students are also provided with tabs which can be borrowed within the campus for educational uses.
Hostel Facility: BRSNC has hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Well-furnished, cheap hostel with quality meals are provided to the students coming from distant places. The hostels are situated a few kilometres away from the college campus and have CCTV surveillance and tight security.
Extra-Curricular Activities: The students are always encouraged to take part in intra and inter college extra-curricular events. Debates, Music Competitions, Writing Competitions, Extempore events are conducted within the college among the departments. Several of the students have represented the college in different forums and have secured top positions in those competitions on behalf of the college.
Games and Sports: The college has a vast playground surrounded by galleries on one side and running tracks on the other three. Every year, in the month of November, the college annual sports takes place where events such as sprint, jumps, throws and several other entertaining and engaging activities are conducted. Inter-departmental football and cricket tournaments are often organised in the college. Other than this, games like basketball, kho-kho, table-tennis and others are coached within the college. The college also has NCC and NSS for students who are willing to take part.
Festivals and Social Events: Every year, social events and the college social takes place where the students are invited to show off their skills and talents on the stage in front of the entire college. The college social SAGNIK takes place for almost a month, where reputed artists are invited to perform and entertain the crowd. Throughout the days of the social, a number of events like fashion-show, film-festivals, and music and dance competitions are organised and conducted.
Students Union: The Students Union in the college is a body created by the students which represents the needs and demands of the students to the college administration and authority. It is headed by a General Secretary (GS) and is assisted by other members such as the AGS, Cultural Secretary, Sports Secretary and others.
Anti-Ragging cell: Ragging of all forms within and outside the college premises is strictly prohibited. The college administration and the union have taken severe steps to prevent harassment of any student. The students are made to fill Anti-Ragging forms where they are required to provide their personal details and also pledge an oath to never resort to any forms of ragging. Anti-Ragging cells have been built and are constantly monitored, where the students can complain if any harassment occurs to them at any time. The entire campus is under CCTV surveillance 24 hours a day.
College Canteen: The College has four well-built and well furnished AC canteens where the students are provided healthy and cheap meals throughout the college hours. The canteen is funded and renovated under the RUSA fund.
Campusing and Placements: A placement cell has been introduced in the college that organises the campusing and placement of the students. The College has CEL coaching, which generally focuses on guiding the students and mentoring them with the help of experienced faculty so that they can crack competitive exams like the SSC, WBCS, UPSC. In-campus interviews are conducted by companies such as Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) and others. Students are placed in high-paying jobs through the campusing cell.
Scholarships and Concessions: The College has a facility of providing scholarships and concessions to the students belonging from the economically backward sections of the society. Also, books and copies are provided to such students at highly subsidized rates from the college.
