Our hair becomes not-so-great and most importantly “unhealthy” during this time that further leads to hair fall and skin diseases. So here we bring to you some easy to go with solutions to prevent the damage. But first, let’s talk about what Flaky scalp and dandruff are.
- Dandruff — those dry, white flakes of skin you brush off your collar or shoulders — is harmless. But it can be embarrassing and itchy. Dandruff isn’t about your hair, or how often you wash it. Instead, it’s about the skin on your scalp.
- Skin cells that grow and die off too fast are the problem. Exactly why that happens isn’t clear. A prevalent fungus called Malassezia may contribute to dandruff. This fungus lives on the scalp of most healthy adults without causing any problems. One theory is that the immune system of someone with dandruff may overreact to that fungus.
- Dandruff may get worse when you’re stressed or sick. Cold, dry winters can trigger dandruff or make it worse, too.
- Dandruff is believed to be related to a fungus known as Malassezia (formerly termed pityrosporum) that lives on the scalp of most people. In some cases, overgrowth of the fungus results in the flakiness of the skin. The reasons for the overgrowth of fungus are unclear but may be related to increased oil production, hormonal changes, stress, neurologic disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, recovery from chronic conditions such as stroke or heart attack, suppression of the immune system, and infrequent shampooing. There is also some evidence that dandruff may run in families. Scalp flakiness may also be caused by psoriasis or other skin ailments or infections.
Difference between Flaky skin and scalp
- Dandruff and dry scalp have the same main symptoms, which are falling flakes and an itchy scalp, but they are two different conditions. In the dry scalp, the skin gets irritated and flakes off. With dandruff, the cause is too much oil on the scalp. That excess oil causes skin cells to build up and then shed.
10 ways to get rid of Dandruff and Flaky Scalp
1.Have lots of water.
In any disease or infection and any condition, the primal way of dealing with it is to stay hydrated, i.e. to drinks lots of water. During winters, we might feel unnecessary to do it, but it prevents all kinds of unwanted health problems and maintains the moisture level.
2.Have Vitamin C
At the market, load up on vitamin C-rich produce, such as citrus fruit and dark, leafy greens. Vitamin C can help boost the body’s production of collagen, a protein that maintains skin and other connective tissues.
Take a bowl and mix egg white, ½ teaspoon vinegar, 1 spoon oil. Apply the paste and leave on your hair for 30 minutes and rinse it with water and shampoo. The egg white nourishes the hair, vinegar removes the dead skin cells, and oil moisturizes the hair. This is extremely useful during winters.
4.Use Lukewarm water while bathing
The feeling of washing your hair with boiling water might be quite satisfying and relaxing, but in the long term, it is harmful. Extremely hot water is harmful to your hairs and causes damage. Use lukewarm water for washing the hair.
Most of us like the idea of leaving our hair free and styling it up with our dress but in winters the cool breeze causes cold burn that in turn brings dandruff and flaky skin. So, in winters drape up your hair using scarves, caps, or hair masks.
6.Minimal usage of shampoo
Need a little extra TLC during wintertime? Shampooing strips moisturize from the scalp and hair, so wash the strands every other day. Everyone’s hair is different—if washing once or twice a week is normal for you, consider adding some time between shampoos to take dry winter conditions into account. And don’t skip the conditioner—skipping the ‘poo’ and opting for a quick rinse and conditioning treatment works just fine to keep hair clean and moisturized.
An ACV rinse helps restore your scalp’s pH and ease off symptoms such as itchiness, dryness and flaky scalp. Try making a hair rinse with 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups of water. Wash your hair normally and make a final hair rinse with this mixture, massage your scalp, let the rinse sit for 15 to 20 minutes and wash it off with water.
Some vegetable oil onto your scalp is also an excellent way to prevent dry, itchy or flaky scalp. You don’t need to drown your hair in it; you only need a tiny amount. Dip your fingers lightly, rub them and massage your scalp with the pads of your fingers. Oils will also help with itchiness or dandruff; most oils have some antibacterial or anti-fungal property that will protect against a fungus or bacteria that can arise from an unprotected scalp.
Warning! I don’t advise you to do this every day. I would do it the night before shampooing maybe.
9.Lesser use of chemicals
Do not use too many hair styling products during winter since the skin and scalp are already dry, and the hair is deprived of moisture, they can get easily affected by chemicals, and this might result in the itchy scalp which in turn gives rise to dandruff.
10.Wash thoroughly and have Lemon water
Dandruff and flaky scalp can be caused by extreme stress as well as not properly washing off hair care products. In the former case, make sure you take enough rest and eat healthy. In the latter case, ensure you rinse your scalp thoroughly to ensure there are no hair styling products left behind. Rinse your hair with lemon water, as it helps in combating dandruff!
